Spot the social enterprise

Eight Chorlton High students went to an Innovation and Social Enterprise Schools conference at Urbis, Manchester in November 2007. Different stalls were laid out by social enterprises advertising their activities. To get a flavour of the conference, two students filmed a few stalls.

Watch the film and see if you can see what some social enterprises are called. See if you can tell what they do from their names or the contents of their stalls?

DIG it

DIG are an organic box delivery company in Manchester. They are a young company, just starting out and we filmed them over Christmas 2007, to find out about their business and consider why they might be called a social enterprise.

Watch the 5 minute film below, listening out for the social issues and environmental concerns that they think about as part of doing their jobs.

Consider the following questions:
What are their motivations for starting the company?

Why did they decide to set up an organic box delivery rather than another business?

Why do they try to buy from local farmers and producers?

Why do they buy from Europe as part of a ‘worker’s co-operative’?
